World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. In Barrie the day started with members of Barrie's three Rotary Clubs, Mayor Jeff Lehman, and local dignitary representatives gathered at City Hall for the Polio Day Flag raising and ended with  a Tri Club Polio Walk from Centennial Beach ending at Hooligans for some fellowship.  Even the newest members of our Rotary family attended to help raise awareness.  Rotary, along with our partners, has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979 and we won't stop until we end the disease for good.
