Leah Bergstrome -Indigenous Patient Navigator RVH

Leah Bergstrome identifies as Mohawk-French Metis.  She currently lives in Orillia and much of her family resides in Northern Ontario and Quebec with ancestral connections to the Kanesatake Mohawk settlement.  Leah completed a BA in psychology and Native studies at Laurentian University and is currently working toward completion of an MSW in Indigenous Trauma and Resilency at the University of Toronto.

 

She is currently working in the capacity of Aboriginal Patient Navigator with the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Program.  Aboriginal Patient Navigation services have been offered to patients and family members of the SMRCP since fall of 2013 as part of the Cancer Program's commitment to Cancer Care Ontario's Aboriginal Cancer Strategy. As well as providing individual patient support, Leah provides extensive community outreach working with community Elders, Traditional Teachers and Healers to offer culturally specific support related to cancer prevention, screening, palliative care and planning for end of life.
